I admit that I’ve been a bit MIA lately on this blog, but it’s because I’ve been working hard on a few things: most notably my day job which commands most of my time. I’ve also worked on a side project, a new San Diego-themed blog called SprawlCrawl which is going to focus on real estate & lifestyle in San Diego neighborhoods. I am pretty excited about this and most of my blogging energy has been directed that way, but I haven’t forgotten about this blog!
The most notable thing that’s happened since I last blogged is that I’m making a conscious effort to eat a plant-based diet. I don’t want this to turn into a preachy blog where I impose my world views on everyone, but it all boils down to the fact that once again, I watched a documentary (in this case it was Cowspiracy, highly recommended) that once again opened up my eyes to the fact that I freaking love animals. Like, I don’t expect the entire world to go vegan in order for a more sustainable future, but given that I can live perfectly fine without meat & animal products…I just don’t see why I wouldn’t. I live in an area where there are vegan alternatives for just about everything — from pizza to burgers to Asian dishes and tasty desserts. Plus, considering my commitment to trying to lose weight and get fit — the harder I make it for me to indulge on shitty restaurant food instead of being creative and cooking whole foods at home, the better. Of course I realize it’s possible to eat terrible while being vegan, but I think I have enough base knowledge about nutrition to make good choices for myself.
This is my first attempt at going vegan. My last attempt at vegetarianism lasted 8 months and I think I did pretty well, but I’ve proven that I can make permanent life changes (it’s been like 1.5 years since I have drank soda and I used to be a daily consumer) so why not try again. If I fail, I fail. But it’s worth an honest attempt anyway. The only thing I’m currently concerned about is my upcoming trip to Virginia Beach for a week. I’m leaving on Saturday and this is the most critical time during any diet change — I have to make it through 7 hours of plane travel & airport food and then try to find vegan options in Virginia Beach. I think I’ll do fine as long as I keep my resolve up and focus on the big reasons that I’m doing this.
Exercise-wise, I’ll give myself an ‘okay’. Monday I was having bad vertigo so I didn’t do anything. Tuesday I went on a walk, but that was basically it. Wednesday I went to a grueling spin class for 50 minutes in which I burned almost 600 calories and had a lot of fun doing it. I’m going to go to some kind of workout class today, and I definitely plan on doing cardio hip hop on Friday night. In VA, I’m going to run on the boardwalk and hope to do that every morning. We shall see!
Anyway, here’s hoping that my next update will talk about all the good vegan things I’ve eaten and it won’t be a disappointing failure post. 🙂---------------
