Long time no talk, ye two faithful readers! I spent the last four days in Las Vegas alongside my hubby who was attending the Sony Online Entertainment annual convention, and it was a blast. My friend Caitlin came along with, and we ended up meeting our other friend Allison from Minnesota there! It was Allison’s first time in Vegas so we wanted to make sure we got a taste of the variety that Vegas offers without breaking the bank. Here’s a quick look at our adventures.
Thursday we took the hour-long afternoon flight into Vegas. We flew Spirit Airlines, which looked like it was going to be a great deal. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the small print that told me you have to pay for both checked luggage and carry-on bags! I have never had to pay $40+ for a carry-on in my life. Absurd. I think it ended up costing the same price as flying Southwest and it was smaller and more uncomfortable…so…lesson learned for next time. We met Allison at the airport and took a cab to our hotel room at Planet Hollywood. Our room was small but nice, and had a nice large soaking tub. Unfortunately our view was not great (it was some kind of giant concrete dome) but we didn’t spend much time in the room anyway.
Thursday evening we were pretty starving when we got off the plane. Thus started the beginning of our constant battle to find vegan food. We ate at a swanky Japanese place for dinner, and I ended up having a vegetarian sushi roll, edamame, and some crispy green beans. We then headed to the SOE Live welcome banquet and watched a couple hours of the presentation before hopping in cab over to the MGM Grand to see the Cirque du Soleil show, KA. It was quite gorgeous and technologically amazing, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed compared to Mystere. I felt like there were less neat circus tricks and the emphasis was more on this light story and visual impressiveness. Not saying I didn’t enjoy it, I just wanted it to be as good as Mystere and I thought it fell a little bit short.
Thursday night we hit up the craps tables a bit at MGM Grand and then gambled a bit more at Planet Hollywood before going to bed. Friday morning we woke up and had breakfast at Planet Dailies in our hotel, which was mediocre. I had oatmeal with brown sugar, fruit, and soy milk, and my husband had granola with soy milk and fruit. I thought his food was tastier than mine, but I’m really picky with my oatmeal. I don’t like it when it’s pastey – I want it to be oatey. After that, we gambled a little bit and lost money before heading to the Planet Hollywood pool. Ugh. This wasn’t that great. The Pleasure Pool at Planet Hollywood in Vegas is basically themed like a nightclub during the day. The pool is shallow and no one was swimming — they were all lining the outside of the pool drinking and dancing. It felt like a meat market and I felt old as hell. Also, the water was FREEZING. I thought I would want that considering it was 100+ degrees outside, but it was so cold that I didn’t even want to drink my pina colada. This party type of atmosphere just ain’t for me.
After that we went and watched another of my husband’s panels and then went back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner. We met our good friends for dinner at PF Changs, one of the best vegan options nearby our hotel. I really enjoy the curry vegetables there, so this was one of the more filling meals of the whole trip. I generally don’t like chain restaurants, but PF Changs is an exception. It’s not the best Asian food, but it is sufficient in a pinch. We then went back to our hotel room and got dressed up for the zombie prom. I opted not to decorate my face with zombie makeup because I didn’ t want to get itchy. I put on a cute polka-dot dress that I haven’t worn since 2007 and it fit me better than it did back then, which was awesome! I had a blast drinking tasty beverages and dancing my ass off at the ‘prom’ with my husband and our friends. After that, another trip to the craps table resulted in some hefty losses and I went to bed as a sad panda.
Saturday morning we all felt kind of ‘bleh’ and slept in a little bit. We got up around 11 and after Starbucks, went in search of food. We walked through Paris and Bally’s and ended up having to go to a shitty burger place where we paid like $75 for lunch (for 3) and had boring quinoa patties. I was disappointed in the taste, however afterward I started to feel incredibly sick. I thought I was going to throw up while walking back to our room but I made it and after lying down I felt okay. We got our pictures taken with a green screen at the convention and then laid around more in the room until it was time to meet friends for dinner. And then, the highlight of the trip — our dinner at Botero in the Wynn.
My husband told me that most of the restaurants in The Wynn have vegan options because the owner is vegan. Botero had a five course vegan tasting menu that was just incredible. I’d highly recommend this meal for anyone, omnivore or vegan, who wants a fantastic meal.
The first course was a light heirloom gazpacho that was wonderful. Second was a peach salad with the most tasty croutons I have ever had in my life. Third course was an avocado brown rice spaghetti that was the highlight of the meal. Fourth was a tofu steak that was really soft and creamy and decadent. Finally, we had an amazing chocolate mousse with this coconut creme mousse on top that made me the happiest person on earth. I had a great $22 champagne drink called The Dream as well. It seriously gave me so much hope and filled me with such excitement that there could be a place with such a delicious menu that is 100% plant based. Even the omnivores at my table were jealous of the $65 vegan tasting menu. I would like everyone to try it!
Enough of that. We gambled more money away on Saturday and today we headed back to San Diego. Breakfast was a Starbucks chai tea latte, lunch was a boring vegetarian hummus wrap from the airport, and dinner was Chipotle (my groceries are coming via Amazon Fresh tomorrow, so I was lazy tonight). I am so eager to get back to cooking and eating good quality food and not having to track something down to eat. I need vegetables!
