There’s this supposed tastebud phenomena where the more you eat of a food, the more you crave that food and the less you crave the foods you don’t eat. I’ve seen this in action while doing the keto diet — when I give up sugar for a month, I stop living for sugar. (side note: I don’t know anything about that right now because I’m certainly getting more than my fair share of sugar right now). However, It’s been almost two months of being vegan and I’ve not had a single craving for cheese, butter, milk, or meat. Pretty fascinating actually. It feels like when I quit drinking Diet Coke — I just decided one day that I was done with it and I never craved it and never wanted it again.
Anyway, here’s what my mouth has been craving lately.
The past week, every day all I can think of is avocados. I want them sliced up on top of my food. I want to mash them with a fork with a bit of salt, pepper & lemon juice and spread them on toast. I want a sandwich with avocado and sprouts. I want a wrap with hummus and avocado on it. I want homemade guacamole on all my shit. Basically, I can’t get enough of these little weird green creatures. Good thing I live in California?
Tortilla Chips & Salsa
There is something amazing about the crunchy texture and salty flavor of tortilla chips combined with the saucy, spicy, tomatoey taste of salsa. It’s really hard for me not to eat an entire bag of tortilla chips when I sit down for a snack.
I’m not a carbitarian, but lately I’ve been really craving hearty sprouted seedy wheat bread. Not that processed white bread shit, but the good flavorful wheaty taste of high quality seeded bread. I’ve been having peanut butter toast, or sandwiches (usually paired with avocado) and it’s basically my favorite thing ever.
Ever since making overnight oats, I want them for breakfast every morning. I eat them the traditional way, with berries & bananas. I like to put some maple syrup in and some cinnamon to sweeten it up (because I have had a horrible sweet tooth lately). Rolled oats are the best.
I have an iced tea maker and I go through basically a pitcher a day. Granted, I work from home, so that means I’m drinking this stuff all day long as my lifeblood. I’ve been trying to alternate with caffeine-free types so that I’m not drugging myself up with caffeine all day, but my favorite Republic of Tea flavors are caffeinated. I don’t put anything else in my tea, unsweetened is the way to go!
My husband recently introduced me to cornichons, which are tiny gherkin pickles made French style (read: extremely sour and delicious). I can seriously consume a jar in a day, but I’ve been doing my best to avoid doing that.
I used to always want my bell peppers cooked all the way through (looking at you, Chipotle) but now I love them raw. I put them on wraps, dip them in hummus & eat them plain, add them to just about every stir fry or dish that I have.
What about you? What have you been craving?---------------
