Cowles Mountain is one of the truly special pieces of nature that San Diego can post about. It’s a 3 mile hike (1.5 up, 1.5 down) up a very steep mountain that has a truly glorious view from the top. It’s one of the best workouts in the city, and one of the most hiked mountains in the entire country. In a little over an hour, you can get a consistent 800 calorie burn without even running! It’s great for people watching too, because people strap weights to themselves, carry kettlebells, and wear some of the most revealing workout clothing you’ll ever see. Great eye candy, if ya know what I’m saying. There’s also a lot of dogs, which is always fun.
I used to be utterly exhausted hiking Cowles, like as in I needed to take several breaks along the way and could barely breathe by the time I got to the top. It’s definitely a testament to my improved fitness that today I felt barely out of breath, needed very little recovery at the top, and even ran most of the way back down the mountain. I don’t claim to be the world’s best hiker, because I’m *far* from it, but I definitely deserve a ‘most improved’ badge of honor!
The weather today was cool, just under 70 degrees, so it was the perfect weather to hike. The sky was clearer than I think I’ve ever seen it, and we could see the downtown skyline from the summit. It’s one of those things that makes me stop and think about how wonderful San Diego really is. You can stand on top of a mountain and below you there’s lakes, trees, desert, ocean, downtown skyline, parks, highways, you name it. I definitely don’t take this city for granted. Shit’s gorgeous, yo.
