I saw this good blog hop from over on Equestrian Journey, and I thought it invoked some interesting thinking and wanted to chime in. She asked the question — “We love sharing what we do with our horses, but what will you NOT do?”
Here’s the list of horsey related things I will not do.
I will not ride without a helmet. I used to make exceptions for this all the time, but not anymore! No helmet, no ride.
I will not medicate my horse so that I can ride it. If there comes a time where I need to bute or give other painkillers to Rosie to “keep her sound”, I will not ride her. I have a careful moral compass when it comes to using my horse for my personal benefit, and I would never do this.
I will not breed my horse. I used to have different thoughts on this, but I now know there are way too many unwanted horses out there. Why contribute to the problem when it’s woefully unnecessary?
I will never eat horse. Do as Romans do and all that, but I don’t care what sort of situation I’m in – horses are not food. Neither are cows, pigs, chickens, lambs. Animals are friends, not food.
I will not support or attend horse racing. Too many horse deaths, too many cruel & inhumane practices, way too many Thoroughbred by-products tossed into slaughterhouses and feedlots. It’s a deeply flawed industry.
I will not show in a discipline where I need a “blinged out” saddle.
I will not gallop on trail. I used to do this, but now trail rides are for relaxing. I want my horse to always be calm and relaxed even if a newbie is on her back, and I don’t want her to get antsy.
