I’m much better at taking care of my horse than I am at doing maintenance tasks on myself! I’ve been avoiding the dentist like the plague, but Rosie is almost exactly 1 year from her last teeth floating so she had a visit with the horsey dentist today. Everything went smoothly, well, I mean the dentist part did.
It all started when I went to get her and saw THIS:
Oh boy. Someone had her sheet off for a day and really took advantage of it. It was all wet and sticky and made her look like a beauty queen. Oh well. The ranch was still drying out from Friday’s rain, so unfortunately all the arenas are still closed. Meaning this girl hasn’t gotten out for a good romp since Thursday afternoon, making for a crazy pony (note the stud chain). We’ve been using the parking lot as a makeshift round pen for lunging, though nothing faster than a trot because the footing is hard and definitely not arena-quality.
So I’m lunging her, trying to keep her to a trot despite her freaking out at every sight and sound, totally on edge at everything. One minute she’s trotting and sniffing the ground, the next she took a flying leap and ended up getting the lunge line under one of her front legs. She freaks out and stops, then backs up applying more and more pressure to her nose. I’m thinking, “Shit, I should just give her more lunge line” but, well, she didn’t give me a chance to really feed her out some line before whirling around and taking off. I decided not to get dragged and she pulled the line out of my hands and went galloping away over back to her pen. I ran after her, and by the time I got there some other kind soul had caught her. Well, kind of. She was wedged in a tiny aisle between pipe corrals, her butt about 2 inches from a hot wire and she was being nibbled by a horse on the other side. Ugh. We eased the line from under her leg and finally she was safely caught again.
Thankfully she didn’t get hurt! It’s never a dull moment with this mare.
I led her back to the covered crossties and started to groom her while the rain began to pour again. I managed to mostly clean her up before the dentist got there to do her thing.
The dentist said her teeth were pretty sharp, so I’m glad I had her out when I did. She enjoyed her sedation for toothie time and I gave her some bute since the dentist said she’d probably be a little sore from having her jaw held open. Aww, poor thing. After that, I took off and hauled ass back to the car because the rain was coming down HARD. We have another day of rain tomorrow, which means it’s going to be forever until we can ride in the arenas again. So frustrating! We need this rain in San Diego, but couldn’t it all come at once and just dry out again? 😉
