So it turns out – naming a baby is freaking hard. Not just any baby, but our impending baby boy in particular.
My husband and I had tons of names that we loved. A whole shared Google Spreadsheet of perfect names that we both agreed on. The problem? They were all girl names. We have yet to find a name for our incoming boy that we both love. (Luke seems convinced that he’s going to get me to agree to a Star Wars name, but yeah…dream on buddy. We are not having a son named Anakin).
Baby name guides are no help either. Take a look at the most popular baby boy names of 2014:
Eh. I will not be naming him anything that rhymes with Aiden. Almost all of these names end in N, and in the Facebook baby groups I belong to (dear god, there’s a post waiting to be written on those groups) almost every baby boy follows that convention. Hudson, Judson, Braxton, Jayden, Owen, Grayson, Colton, Evan, Brayden….the list goes on and on.
And then, family always has an opinion. My mom has finally stopped sending me baby name suggestions, but there was a deluge of names coming in for awhile. None of which we liked.
And then, you already know someone with every name. So when Luke suggests “Percy Jackson” as the name, I’m like – “My cousin’s stepsister’s Dad is named Percy Jackson, and that’s just weird.” Or someone’s dog is already named something. Or Luke won’t let us name him Milo because it sounds like an orange striped cat. Or I went to elementary school with someone named X and now that’s the only person I can think of when I hear the name X. So that means 99% of the world’s names feel off limits to us.
And sometimes you really like the long form of the name, but you can’t come up with a suitable nickname. Like, Sebastian is FINE, but Seb is not, Bast is not. No one calls anyone by a long three-syllable name.
Everyone has an opinion, and everyone wants to know the name. Once we finally figure it out (if we’re not divorced by then, gah) then we’ll probably tell the grandparents and my best friends and that’s it. Is there some kind of name brainstorming trick that I’m not thinking of yet? HEPL!!---------------
