So tonight, I finally registered for my membership at CrossFit Elysium. The way this box works (and many CrossFit boxes work the same) is that your first month is spent going to special fundamentals classes that teach you the different exercises so that you know how to use proper form. The brutal thing about this class is that the first 30 minutes are spent learning the moves which requires many many reps until you get it down 100%. By the end of that time, I was already exhausted. There were moments where my legs were vibrating, I couldn’t walk as my hamstrings were cramping up, and I actually felt lightheaded while learning squats with 65# of weight because I wasn’t remembering to BREATHE.
But then, after you learn everything you actually do your WOD (workout of the day). Today’s was brutal. We had to do 15 kettlebell squats, 15 burpees (aka the devil), and then a 200m run…as many times as possible until 15 minutes was up. Sure that doesn’t seem like long, but let me tell you….after the first 10 minutes I thought I was going to die. My hamstrings are now so sore that walking feels weird and I couldn’t even do actual runs because my legs simply wouldn’t work.
Everyone was so nice though, and I already feel a sense of community. We were cheering each other on and giving each other high fives and it was inspiring. The coach, Sarah, was so muscular and strong and was a major motivator to keep going. Anyway, it was really awesome and I’m happy that I signed up but I’m afraid of what tomorrow will bring. My legs are already frozen up and I dread how walking is going to feel tomorrow….---------------
